Most organizations don’t connect a downsizing to their retention initiatives. But consider what’s at stake if you don’t:

Protecting your company’s brand with retained and departing employees

Retaining key talent during transition

Employing recruitment strategies that protect and promote employer brand

Realizing ROI on talent you transition

When employees leave an organization, they don’t just become former employees. They may become customers, referral sources, competitors, maybe even future employees or contractors. Their choices will depend in large part on the way they’re treated as they exit. Remaining employees watch closely. Managed well, companies can strengthen loyalty and mitigate retention risk. Mismanaged, the organization suffers voluntary exits from the critical retained talent pool.

You’ve worked hard to create goodwill during the selection, development and retention processes. It need not disappear in the transition process — now is another opportunity to build goodwill.

In this session a senior level HR panel will address how to integrate transition into the normal lifecycle of your talent management strategy.

Edmonton… Top-notch apprentices, employers and instructors are being honoured for their exceptional achievements in the trades at the 10th annual Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Awards event in Edmonton.

Each year, apprentices who achieve the highest marks in their final period of apprenticeship for their trade, supported by strong recommendation from their employers, receive a Top Apprentice Award. This year, 52 apprentices are being awarded for achieving excellence in their trades.

“Alberta is a leader in apprenticeship and industry training, and these award recipients have helped to build and maintain the province’s impressive global reputation,” said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “These individuals have greatly contributed to the province through their consistent hard work and determination, and will undoubtedly serve as role models for all people in the trades.

Two employers will receive awards – one from the north region of the province and one from the south – for their outstanding contribution to the apprenticeship and industry training system. The Employer of the Year Award of Excellence recipients for 2005-06 are Ace Construction Company Inc. of Calgary and Daniel’s Welding Ltd. of Edson.

Top instructor awards recognize instructors’ excellence in training and commitment to apprenticeship. They will be awarded to Dave Zdebiak, electrician instructor at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, and Chris Taggart, millwright instructor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

“Our 2006 award recipients deserve big congratulations, and there’s no better way than a night of celebration to honour Alberta’s best in the trades,” said Brian Bickley, chair of the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board. “Hard working individuals along with the support of industry and government help Alberta’s apprenticeship and industry training system to remain strong and able to meet the demands of a growing workforce.”

For more information about apprenticeship, visit http://www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca A list of award recipients by name and trade can be found online at: http://www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca/scholarships_awards/top_apprentice_2006.asp

This announcement is one of the key actions under Premier Ed Stelmach’s plan to build a stronger Alberta. Other priorities for the government are to govern with integrity and transparency, manage growth pressures, improve Albertans’ quality of life and provide safe and secure communities.

Using Statistical Applications in Compensation

Webinar Overview:

This course teaches the mathematical skills necessary for compensation administration. The emphasis of this course is to provide the theoretical framework necessary to understand the implications and limitations of methods including linear and nonlinear regression, outlier detection and strategies, nonrandom sampling and missing data. The goal of the course is to set the theoretical discussions in practical applications for the compensation profession. This will not only provide training in the application of advanced statistical methods for compensation, but also the underlying statistical theory necessary to question and defend such application.

We begin with a discussion of methods describing the advantages and disadvantages of descriptive statistics (sample and population) from a distribution theory and outlier assessment perspective. We then discuss measures of relationship (continuous and categorical methods) again emphasizing the underlying distribution theory, statistical assumptions and robustness to assumption violations. This is followed by a discussion of model building and model assessment for the compensation practitioner (including nonlinear regression and robust methods). We conclude with a discussion of the presentation of data analysis for various levels of audience mathematical sophistication.

Learning Objectives:

Obtain a solid understanding of the concepts of statistics (including assumptions and impacts of violations)

Apply these statistical concepts to compensation planning scenarios such as nonlinear model development for executive salaries

Relate the results of data analysis at various levels of technical detail

The strategic view is both short and long term, with the focus on accountability throughout the process. Most importantly, it focuses on attracting, developing, and retaining the best talent available. To accomplish this, the human resources function must operate as a single unit: staffing, compensation, employee relations, and development all having the same view of the goal, which is to generate shareholder value through human capital investments. The goal must have quantitatively measurable objectives that are tied directly to the strategic initiatives of the company. How to achieve this complex arrangement and measure the results is the take away of this session.

Topics Include:

* A results-based management system
* The role of chief talent officer
* Measuring talent management
* Measuring recruiting effectiveness
* Achieving business alignment with talent management
* How talent management fits into human capital metrics
* The role of ROI in recruiting and talent management

Speaker:
Jack J. Phillips, Ph.D.
Chairman
ROI Institute, Inc

As a world-renowned expert on accountability, measurement and evaluation, Jack Phillips provides consulting services for Fortune 500 companies and major global organizations. The author or editor of more than 50 books, Phillips provides workshops and conference presentations throughout the world.

His background led Phillips to develop the ROI Methodology—a revolutionary process that provides bottom-line figures and accountability for all types of learning, performance improvement, human resources, technology and public policy programs.

Edmonton… This morning, Centre High Campus hosted the official launch of new resources developed to teach students how to work safely before they enter the workforce.

“Educating students in the classroom about workplace health and safety is an excellent way to prepare them for the realities that they will face at school and on the worksite,” said Education Minister Gene Zwozdesky. “The workplace health and safety learning and teaching resources provide a comprehensive toolkit and binder to help teachers demonstrate to students how to keep classrooms and worksites safe.”

Students will receive a Work Safe Passport where teachers and employers can record the health and safety training completed. Courses recorded in the passport will be recognized by employers, and will make students more marketable when seeking employment.

“Education is the best way to prevent injuries and suffering,” said Human Resources and Employment Minister Mike Cardinal. “The new Work Safe Alberta Passport will help employers and workers.”

“Training makes the students more aware of the environment they are working in,” said Bruce Graham of Western Materials Handling. “The Passport will be useful to employers because they will know that the workers are certified to operate equipment safely and properly.”

Resources are provided to assist teachers when workplace health and safety is covered in high school courses. These resources include teacher’s notes, handouts, posters and other helpful tools on a variety of topics such as emergency response plans, hazard identification, and workplace health and safety legislation.

The health and safety teaching resources are being made available to high schools across the province throughout the fall of 2006. Teacher preparation workshops will be offered to support the use of these resources. More information on this initiative is available online at http://www.hre.gov.ab.ca/whs-jointed.
