I haven’t paid much attention to vertical job-search engines. My interest is on the other side of the job-search market; getting job postings out to widest possible group of job seekers.
Toady, I did a little digging around Careerjet.ca.
Careerjet is a job search engine designed to make the process of finding a job on the Internet easier for the user. It maps the huge selection of job offerings available on the Internet in one extensive database by referencing job pages originating from company web sites, recruitment agency web sites and large specialist recruitment sites. Using a fast and straightforward interface, users can query this database saving them the trouble of going to each site individually. The job offerings themselves are not hosted by Careerjet and users are always redirected to the original job listing. Essentially Careerjet acts as traffic driver to those sites.
As I was looking through the listings it occurred to me, this is the type of on-line service that can spread a job posting beyond the bounds of the places I post jobs. In fact, with a couple of simple searches, I was able to find a number of jobs we have posted around the province.
In Alberta’s current economic climate, job seekers have little need of this kind of service. Employers are desperate for workers and use every available media to advertise their openings. You can’t drive down the street, or turn on your T.V. without seeing job ads of one type or another.
I’m not sure how a service like Careerjet.ca gets the attention of the average job seeker. I took a quick survey of eight or ten people I know are actively looking for work, and not one of them was aware of vertical job-search engines, let alone Careerjet.ca. For all but the most Internet-savvy users, search means Google, Yahoo, etc.
Careerjet.ca looks like a useful service for the average job seeker and I would recommend it to anyone asking advice for their job search.
