Just Measure These Three Core Traits.

Over the past few years, I’ve come to appreciate the importance team and community skills play when hiring a candidate. As a rookie recruiter, I focused on competency almost exclusively. If the candidate seemed particularly motivated, that would bump them in the ratings. Team skill seemed to be something that could be taught. Having had my fingers third-degree burned a couple of times, I now recognize the importance of hiring employees that fit the team.

Lou Alder shares his thoughts on the three core traits that need to be measured:

  • Competency
  • Motivation
  • Team skills

Measuring teams skills is equally as important as measuring motivation and competency. Again, don’t get fooled during the interview by measuring the wrong thing for team skills. Team skills are not measured by friendliness or warmth shown during the interview. Knowing what team skills means on the job can help in assessing it.
