Edmonton… An Edmonton company specializing in working alone solutions, a central Alberta firm involved in the oil and gas production services industry, and an innovative Calgary company are all recipients of the 2007 Work Safe Alberta Awards for Innovation in Workplace Health and Safety. The awards were jointly presented today by Iris Evans, Minister of Employment, Immigration and Industry, and the Occupational Health and Safety Council.

The Award of Distinction is presented to organizations or individuals that have been outstanding in developing, promoting and enhancing a health and safety innovation.

• Darrell McIntyre, Nabors Production Services, Sylvan Lake, Programmable AC Electric (PACE) Service Rig - This AC driven and operated service rig has improved control of the blocks during operation and control/braking when driving.
• Randy Watson, Bux Enterprises Ltd, Calgary, The Rappin Stik - The Rappin Stik allows operators to effectively wrap pallets without having to go under a suspended load. It also reduces the need for awkward positions.

The Award of Merit is presented in recognition of innovative programs, policies or projects that demonstrate a proven accomplishment in the area of occupational health and safety.

• Bjonna Fuchs, Safety On-Site Systems Ltd., Edmonton, Man Down Solution - The Man Down Solution integrates a Global Positioning System (GPS) that allows an employer to have continuous communication with employees working alone, even in remote locations. It also allows the worker to initiate alarms.

“These awards recognize original Alberta innovations where the top priority is health and safety in the workplace,” says Evans. “These Albertans and the companies they work for should be very proud of their initiatives in making our province a safer place to do business.”

These initiatives are key actions under Premier Ed Stelmach’s plan to provide safe and secure communities. Other government priorities are to improve Albertans’ quality of life, manage growth pressures, govern with integrity and transparency, and build a stronger Alberta.
